What Pelvic / Obstetric Ultrasound Checks

• Early pregnancy location (to confirm the pregnancy is inside the uterus)
• Fetal heartbeat and viability in early pregnancy
• Gestational age / how far along the pregnancy is
• Basic fetal growth and position in later pregnancy
• Uterus size, uterine lining and presence of fibroids
• Ovaries (cysts, enlargement, suspicious masses)
• Possible causes of pelvic pain, spotting or abnormal bleeding

Who Should Get This Scan

• Women with suspected early pregnancy
• Women who missed period and want to confirm location and viability of the pregnancy
• Pregnant mothers who want dating / gestational age and heartbeat confirmation
• Women with lower abdominal pain, cramping, pelvic pressure or unusual bleeding
• Women with known ovarian cysts or fibroids who need monitoring

How the Ultrasound Works

1. Clinical Assessment
   Short review of symptoms, last menstrual period, cycle pattern, pregnancy history and current concerns (pain, bleeding, discharge, nausea, etc.).
2. Ultrasound Scan
   A non-invasive imaging scan is performed to visualise pelvic organs and, if pregnant, the gestational sac, embryo/fetus and heartbeat when visible. For very early pregnancy or certain pelvic reviews, an internal (transvaginal) approach may be recommended for clearer detail. You will be told first before anything is done.
3. Findings Explained
   The clinician explains what is seen: pregnancy status and estimated dating, fetal heartbeat if detectable, any fibroid, cyst, or fluid collection that may explain symptoms.
4. Next Steps
   You are advised on follow-up: routine antenatal follow-up if normal, repeat scan if still early and heartbeat not yet visible, urgent review if any worrying sign, or gynaecology follow-up if a structural issue (e.g. cyst) needs monitoring.
