• The cut is deep — if you are able to see fat, muscle, or bone or it is deeper than the skin’s superficial layer
• The edges are separated — when the wound does not naturally close when applying pressure on it

• The wound measures more than 1 to 2 cm long especially if the affected body part experiences a lot of movement or tension, such as the joints
• The cut is on the face or some other visible body part, where it would benefit from suturing for aesthetic purposes
• The cut occurred as a result of a dirty or contaminated object, thereby increasing the risk of infection if not sutured
• You are not sure about the severity of the wound — better safe than sorry

When to seek urgent or emergency care: severe or uncontrollable bleeding, a deep or large wound, broken bones in conjunction with the wound, or significant blood loss.

• Protect the wounded area from sunlight as this may influence how the scar will heal
